This is Heron with a second character, Stellaluna from the book Stellaluna. She's a fruit bat (flying fox: really good eyesight, no echolocation, eats fruit) who was raised by a bird. And currently thinks she's a bird named Pip.

Fun fact: I'll be 24 in July. I still have this book.
